History Of The Ford Fiesta

One of Fords most instantly recognisable brands, the Fiestas rise to the top was a rapid one. Taking the automotive world by storm, the Fiesta raced to become the UKs best selling hatchback of 1978, only two years after its release.

After losing this title to the Austin Metro in 1981, Ford returned to the drawing board and came back swinging in 1983 with the Fiesta MkII, a car that would help the company dominate British roads throughout the 80s and 90s.

While light commercial van versions of the Fiesta had been available since the brands inception in 1976, it wasnt till 1991 that Ford realised the true potential of this vehicle and launched the Ford Courier in Europe.

Based on the MkIII version of the Fiesta, the Courier had a raised and widened cargo area at the back in the form of an enlarged cube that sat behind the driver and passenger seats and was separated from the front cabin by a bulkhead.

This Ford Couriers design was revised for the MkIV Fiesta, before being completely replaced in 2002 by the more streamlined MkV Ford Fiesta Van. The Mk V and VI Fiesta Van models are simply 3-door versions of the standard vehicle, with bulkheads separating the cabin and the cargo area and panels covering the rear windows.

The cargo area floor is also reinforced, making the Fiesta Van a far sturdier prospect than its hatchback cousin.
