History

Citroen was started by Andre Citroen as a manufacturing company back in 1915, specialising in the manufacture of grenades for use in the First World War. After the end of the war, Andre Citroen sought to produce his first motor car, the Type A.

Over time, Citroen Automobiles went from strength to strength but the abstract and avant-garde nature of Andre's designs lead to over production of exuberant vehicles with little sales. Heading into financial ruin, Citroen was taken over by the tyre giant Michelin, its biggest creditor at the time. Through investment, Michelin pulled Citroen through, capitalising on the strengths of Andre's Traction Avant car which was met with popular demand.
When the oil crisis hit in 1973, Citroen suffered huge losses as the world economy softened and fearing huge job losses in the sector, the French government held talks with Michelin and Peugeot to merge the two automobile companies in an effort to cut costs and improve productivity. In 1976, the merger was complete forming the PSA Alliance which is still in place today.

Over time, the influence of Peugeot became stronger, with production moving towards safe, dependable models with a somewhat staid appearance. This saw Citroen return to financial success throughout the 1980's and 1990's and allowed for new partnerships and ventures to be formed permitting Citroen to move into foreign markets further afield.
Recent success in the Motorsport sector has prompted a return to more elaborate and avant-garde design bringing about a host of new and exciting models whilst still under the ever watchful eye of Peugeot.
